  1. Play Doh is an air-dry clay and it can be reconstituted somewhat *as long as* it hasn't gone past a certain point and dried out too much.  Add a little water and try to mix it in, or even put the Play Doh in a food processor and whir it a bit to break into smaller pieces, then add the water.  You might also need to put back in an air-tight container and let the parts soak together awhile too to soften enough to use.

As mentioned, you can make your own air-dry clay at home... the most common one is salt dough clay.  It and other air-dry clays can be colored by mixing in acrylic paints or painted over.... they'll need to be sealed though to keep any later water or even humidity from breaking them down unless you've painted over the whole item with acrylic paint (the cheapest sealant would be Elmers GlueAll thinned 3 or 4 with water before being painted on).

Other fairly good air-dry clays you can buy at craft and hobby stores would be Crayola Air Dry Clay, or better Makins or Hearty... all of those come precolored.  Or you can buy Creative Paperclay and color it yourself as above.  Even cheaper (but dries kind of rough) would be Celluclay which comes dry with water added at home to make a clay... the white version of it could be colored in the same ways.

  2. Add a little oil to it and work it well.

You can make your own playdough with flour salt oil and water and food colouring.

  3. a drop of oil.. veggie oil...

  4. Add a little water into the container. Make sure you don't put too much in though. Just a teaspoon at a time. Mix it together and judge if you need more water from there :).
