How can I make the most of a long trip to the US?

I went to NYC aged 15 and Toronto 21, for a week each time. Now I'd like to spend 6 months in the US, travelling through, meeting a couple of real life friends and some trusted internet friends - which is not a bad way of keeping out of trouble, being introduced to people (I intend to wow some American women with my 'soothing' British accent - they all love it).....but I think working integrates you best into a place. It's pretty hard to get a decent job in the US at the best of times and especially if you're only staying a few months! What else could I do - know of any good voluntary organisations?
