How can I make the picture better on a 50'' plasma?

I just bought a 50'' Vizio plasma, and just hooked it up to the cable box. my regular sony wega tube tv had a clearer crisp picture. What can I do to increase the picture quality? I do not pay the extra monthly charge for HD, but thinking I may have to. are there any cables or different cable connections that could help? Right now I just have the white, yellow and red cables connected to the box. Not an expert here. Thanks!

its best to prolly get the hd box. its usually about $7 a month. but the reason is, roughly put, is bc the tv is bigger and put on a higher pixelated screen. the hd box will correct that and the cable tech will be able to make the hd box preforn at its highest quality of 1080i, not many cable boxs have been updated to preform at 1080p yet. plus i believe that cable/sat co.s have something to do w/ the tv makers to make the pic worse jus so they can sell more hd boxs. jus like how their is a conspiracy bout virus makers and virus protectors.

Firstly, you just purchased the cheapest quality tv on the planet, and you are surprised by the lack in quality?

Ok, heres your problem, currently you are viewing standard definition tv on a very large high definition display.  A standard definition signal does not have enough data to fill the screen very well.  Your tv is taking that standard definition image and stretching it to fill the screen.  Imagine taking a very low resolution image from your digital camera and blowing it up to poster-size.  High definition images require a high definition source.

Now lets say you do upgrade your cable service to high definition.  You will need to use a different kind of cable.  You will need to use either component video cables or an HDMI cable.  HDMI is an all digital connection while component cable are analog.  Usually HDMI will look better on your tv, and it has the added benefit of carrying audio as well which will decrease cable mess.
