How can I manage with old wall air conditioner in new apartment?

I'm in NJ and my "new" apartment has an old wall air conditioner. I do mean OLD. The screen inside has holes so every now and again, I'll have leaves on my carpet because there's nothing the catch them. Besides, that (of course) my electric bill is through the roof because it has no modern features at all. The thermostat rotary dial is a joke and there's no timer. Worst of all, in the winter, I had to Saran Wrap it to keep cold air out, and now when I come home it's scorching hot since hot air comes right through the old thing. The a/c I had previously (but sold because I thought I wouldn't need it here) at least had the option to recirculate INDOOR air and close the outside vents. Now THAT'S efficient.

Without buying another a/c and blocking a whole window, is there anyway to persuade them to relieve me of this piece of c**p?

Thank you for your help on this.

  1. If air-conditioning was one of the things they used to advertise the apartment, I'd say that they are obligated to provide adequate air-conditioning. File a complaint with the landlord. If they don't respond, contact the Better Business Bureau: www.bbb.org.

Also, if the apartment is not fully enclosed to the exterior (e.g there are holes which let in leaves, cold air, etc.) I would think they are in violation of local housing codes. You can contact your local Health Dept. or Building and Safety Dept.
