I'm 15. I am running my first 10K on September 28. I have been training and I want to win. I think I can. It would help if I could lengthen my stride and figure out how to move my legs faster at the same time. How?

  1. Treadmill would help.  Try and get up to 10 MPH and do that for a long time.

  2. speed is the length of your stride and the number of steps you can take within a given time period.

If your stride is too long then you are taking fewer strides so you are running slower.

You lengthen your stride behind you, not in front.

If you land with your foot in front you will slow down and tire or injure your muscles.

You can lengthen your stride by strengthening your muscles so you have a longer drive phase with your take off foot and leg.

Your foot should contact the ground only slightly in front of your center of gravity, running is a pushing motion not a pulling motion.

You can practice  your stride during your warm up by doing build up strides, it is a feeling, you can tell when  you are over striding.

When running distance races your stride can not be as long as it is when sprinting.

You need to run efficiently since  you must run for a long time.

Just relax, you are running at a percentage of maximum, not as fast as you can run.

  3. remember to pump your arms big and it will lenthen your stride
