  1. An atlas, or is that too passe? lol

    You could find the exact geographical coordinates for both places and use this to determine the distance

  2. If 'latitude(Lambda)/longitude(Theta)' of both places A & B

    are known, 'R' is radial distance.

    Radial distance is first computed in 'Arc' distance in degrees.

    cos R= cos[LambdaA]*cos[LambdaB]

    + sin[LambdaA]*sin[LambdaB]*cos[difference of longitudes];

    Distance

    =60R nautical miles

    =69R statute (ordinary) miles

    =111 km.

    Caution should be exercised while handling trigonometric quantities about the + & - signs, angles greater than 90deg and so on. One may get wrong results if the above mentioned things are not properly interpreted.

    For very short distances and in tropical areas, use of 'Pythagorus' rule gives good results.

    (Radial dist)^2= (diff. of latitudes)^2+(diff.of longitudes)^2.

    in your problem 'Pythagorus' rule can be easily used.
