How can I measure the repelling force of a magnet?

If I place a magnet on a scale, and i place another magnet above it with reversed polarity. Will the repelling force of the magnet register on the scale?

    Make sure that the scales is made of plastic.


  2. The Mullah is correct that if there is a ferromagnetic material in the scale, it could affect the result.

    A reasonable way to minimize that error is to place the 'other' magnet - the one you will hold above the first magnet - in its position before you place the first magnet on the scale, and re-zero the scale (It is called resetting the tare). That way, if the 'repelling' magnet is exerting a force on the scale, that will be included in the zero setting, and you can then rely on the reading you get when you place the first magnet on the scale, under the repelling magnet.
