Question:

How can I mend two broken pieces of bone jewelry together?

I have a Hawaiian fish hook necklace made out of real bone and it's aged nicely. Unfortunately it snapped near the top of the curve where the necklace connects- I consider there to be a weak point. What's the best way to mend these pieces where it could withstand alot before it breaks again? I keep thinking about using an adhesive like epoxy, but I feel there's a better way, so to prolong and preserve the life of this necklace.

I love this piece and I've had it (on) for a long time, like being a part of me. So there's great sentimental value. I hope to wear it again. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. I love Gorilla Glue. It will stick anything and give it a stronger joint. Be certain to read the direction closely and apply on one side with a toothpick or you may get too much. Wipe away any excess before it dries.

  2. Try  one of those instant crazy glues, spreading it and holding the two parts together.

  3. I'd talk to a jeweler an ask their advice as to how it could be repaired. If they say they can do it ask them what procedure would they use.

then you probably could do the same.

I also would say that a good brand super glue that has not been on the shelf long when used in proper direction from the manufacturer would do the trick. It will glue fingers together..and I feel confident that it will take care of your bone joining nicely. Just remember to not use to much. Follow the directions.

    Good luck

  4. Put it in a cast for three months? (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

I have no experience with bone jewelry, but I have used some alphacyanoacrylate (super glue) adhesives that hold just about anything together.  I would think that bone is a porous material, so be sure to use a super glue formulated for porous substrates - it's usually a little thicker than the regular stuff.

Use tweezers, toothpick to apply the cement.  Have a bottle of acetone (fingernail polish remover) handy to "unstick" things if need be.
