How can I move my daughter to the same school my son is in for his IEP?

I have a son who was placed in another school in my district for his IEP. I'm very glad because I do not like the elementary school he was in. His older sisters where always in private school so we could avoid sending them there, but when my son started showing problems in day care we found it in his best interest to move them all to the public elementary school. Fortunately my eldest will be starting in the Jr High next year and will be able to leave this school, but I want to move my other daughter to where my son is. Does anyone know if this is possible?

  1. In my district you can apply for an inter district transfer. If the school you apply at has openings then they typically take applicants on a first come first serve basis. It is a fairly easy process if there are openings. Most districts have similar processes but they might be called different things.

  2. If your daughter isn't on an IEP, your only option is to open enroll her in the school you'd like her to attend. You'd be responsible to provide transportation to and from for her.

  3. I teach in Florida and usually siblings can attend with their brother/sister.  I don't know where you are and what the rules are but I'd certainly ask the administration at your son's school.

  4. This question is unfortunately district specific.  In other words, each school district has their own rules and regulations when it comes to transfers.  In my district, you can apply for a "hardship" transfer based on the fact that it might be a burden to you to have to transport children to different locations.  This type of hardship transfer is very common in my district and is used  for a variety of reasons such as to get children closer to their parents place of employment or to join another sibling at a magnet school.

Your best alternative is to research the types of transfers available in your district and choose the one that has the highest rate of success

  5. You ask - every school has different rules - you might be responsible for transportation but you won't know if it's possible until you ask - I would start with the Principal of the school you WANT your daughter to go to.
