How can I network my Desktop and Laptop with this setup. I cannot change this arrangement bcoz this is a project where nothing can be added or removed. Oh and both the computers have dial-up modems also which could also be used. Please help.

  1. You have 2 separate broadband modems?  That's crazy.  If nothing can be added or removed, you won't be able to network the 2 computers, sorry.  You'd need to add some new cables, or rearrange the modems, or something.

  2. It looks like you are trying to get 2 separate computers to access the internet - each using it's own modem

I'm just guessing, but I'm going to assume you have one DSL account, and the problem is that only one computer can connect at a time. If you actually have 2 separate accounts, then you are on 2 phone lines, not one as the diagram shows.

Either way, you cannot network what you have very easily. Here is what I would do, and if you have 2 accounts, you can save some cash at the same time

Choose 1 DSL modem - this will be your internet access

Internet > Modem > Router WAN Port

    Router LAN Port #1 >> Computer #1

    Router LAN Port #2 >> Computer #2

This setup assumes you can run cables to all computers

If you cannot, make the router a wireless router, add a wireless adapter to computer #2 and connect to the router wirelessly

This way both computers are on the same network and can share the Internet though the router at the same time

    Hope that helps
