How can I not pay a leasing fee from direct tv? Can I purchase my own dvr thru a friend and eliminate the fee?

  1. Not only that but also you can buy your own receiver from directv directly if you're an existin customer for $399 any dvr or hd receiver. for a combined unit (hd-dvr) it's $749. Leasing is the best bet since technology changes so fastly. But as you said you can get a used receiver from a friend and activate it without the lease fee

You need a DirecTV receiver so you have to pay for that (unless you go the illegal route).   You can use some other DVR but you would need another DirecTV receiver to watch a different channel than the one you are recording.  TIVO and REPLAY require contracts but digital hard drive & DVD video recorders do not.  If you go with that last method get a good one such as one from Panasonic or Sony.  But only the DirecTV DVR can watch one and record two channels at at time (the one you are watching and the one you are not watching) without a extra receiver box.
