Question:

How can I observe an elementary school class?

When I finished my Biology degree, I started working in Orthopaedics at the Children's Hospital. As a youngest child with no young relatives, I didn't have any experience with kids, so it wasn't until recently that I realized that I love kids, especially the elementary school kids who are still innocent and curious. And it surprised me that some kids enjoy my company, maybe because when I'm relaxed I like being a little goofy and silly. =)

However, working with them in the hospital context and the school context must be different. So I think, before I decide on this career path, I would like to observe what a day is like in an elementary school class. Does anyone know how I can go about this?

Thanks!

  1. If you live in the area where you grew up, my first suggestion would be to contact your elementary school and see if you can get in there!  That worked for me 8 years ago, and I've been teaching ever since!

  2. Where do you live - you're free to come observe my 2nd grade classroom in Richmond, VA!

There's a couple of ways to go.  Go online and do a search for your city or county school system website.  They should have a search for the school closest to your home address.  Or perhaps you already know the closest school.  I would call and talk to the secretary and make the same statement.  Or - you could call the main school system number and ask them for advice.

The best is if you know a teacher.  Parents are rightfully leery about strangers in the classroom.  It's better if someone can vouch for you.  Plenty of teachers would welcome the help if you'd like to volunteer.

    Good luck!

  3. if i were in your shoes, i would contact some local principals explaining your interests, and ask if you could observe elementary students in the classroom.  they may ask that you get your child abuse clearance paperwork and criminal record checks, so check your state policies on those (usually found on a school website under the employment section).  if you get those now, you won't have to wait until you've found a school to get them.  it can take a few weeks.

  4. I am a teacher...wonderful job and soooo rewarding! All you would need to do is contact the principal at the school in which you're interested in or if you don't know what school to choose contact the school board.
