How can I obtain old work records (1970) from a company that went to computers in 1981?

My father worked for US Steel from 1942 to 1970, they claim to not have his work record. I need these for insurance purposes...help!!!!!!!

  1. most companies keep work records for only 10 years. They probably destroyed them in 1980, and maybe sooner.


  2. Well, they aren't going to have records 40 years old.  It would just be astronomical to track that.

    I'd suggest instead, if you're looking for proof he worked for them, that you get a detailed copy of his social security contributions, from www.socialsecurity.gov.   That will show what he earned, when.

  3. Find out if they have mothballed them or stored them somewhere that you can have access to them.

    Let them know that if necessary you are willing to pay for this service if they cannot allow you to look up your old records yourself.

    They may also have transfered it to micro-fische photo copied records. In which it would be cataloged for easier retrieval!
