Question:

How can I overcome a lack of 'fine dining experience' when trying to get a waiting job?

I have 2 years of experience in a 'quick casual' dining establishment (not a full service restaurant) and now I'm moving to a real city and looking for a real waiting job at a real restaurant while I go to school. I'm nervous that when I apply for a job at an upscale restaurant I'm going to be laughed out of the door, so if anybody has any experience or advice on how to present yourself when applying for a job at a nicer restaurant, and traits I should play up in the resume, please help me out!

  1. Dress professionally as you would imagine a fine waiter at a classy restaurant be dressed. Be clean. Clean nails. Hair tied up if you have long hair. Neatly pressed shirt/pants/skirt.

Learn about the various types of dining equipment. Their names, uses, placement etc. You can google dining utensils or dining etiquette for information on those.

Learn about a bit of the cuisine if you can and the country background, the restaurant chef's style/character, the working environment, etc.

Just be nice and courteous. You should be fine.
