  1. In the US, you can inherit property, just like any other piece of property.  Go to your local courthouse and see if there has been a transfer of the deeds to anyone else in the family.  Go to the funeral home or to the cemetery office and inquire how it's handled in your state.  Also, ask at the local courthouse and they can tell you how to petition to get your inheritance.  It is a common piece of real estate that is often overlooked in wills.

  2. The grave is a plot and considered a piece of land. You get a certificate proving this when it is purchased. The heirs of the person owning the plots now owns them.  So I would contact the cemetery association or whoever keeps it up to see if they have any information on the owner so that you can contact their heir.

  3. I received ownership of my paternal family plot, when my father's estate was settled, as he was the original owner. I own the gravestones, slabs and markers. I retain the right to allow/refuse burial in any unoccupied spaces. Even though I am not charged a lawn maintenance fee, I am responsible for the gravestones, slabs and markers and any adornments/statuary.

I have a deed, filed with the county and a certified copy of that deed, as proof of my ownership, in my safe deposit box.

My maternal family plot is owned by the church next door to the cemetery. Spaces can be reserved for future use, but never owned.

You need to contact the city/county/church in regards to the ownership of your great-greatgrandfather's grave.

  4. Here in the UK, change of ownership of a grave is done through a solicitor, you have to ask all living relatives if they have any objections to the grave being signed over to you.

    Hope this helps.
