How can I paint over an ugly, fake stone wall, circa 1970, that's too hard to remove?

my entry way has a fake stone applied to the wall. what can i do with it to update it, short of blasting it off?

I had a real stone wall in my home - hated it!   Tried various paint techniques to change it but it just looked like a painted rock wall.    I ended up taking down the rock.  It only took me a weekend - I wish I had just done that in the first place.  So my advice is to take it down.
