Question:

How can I paint over silicone caulk or remove it safely?

like and idiot I used waterproof caulk on our new wooden tub surround. We were looking for something that is mildew resistant and didn't even bother to see if it was paintable. So after the long tedious task of caulking everything, I went to paint. What a shock when it didn't stick.

So I have tried all different types of primers to no avail. They have all failed. I would hate to have to remove the caulk, is there another primer that I can use and then paint over that?

If not, what is the best way to remove the caulk?

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

  1. Believe it or not the answer lies in adult beverages!

Pour some cheap vodka in a squirt bottle.

    Spray and Soak.

    Spray and rub.

    Repeat.

  2. You'll just have to peel it off.

We have a wooden mantel and thought it would look better painted white, but soon found out that whoever installed it before we moved in used silicone caulk along every crevice where each piece of wood met another piece.

We ended up dismantling the mantle... there were about 40 big and little pieces of wood all over the living room for a few weeks. We slowly got all that caulk off, reassembled the mantle, and painted it. What a headache.

  3. Nope.  It has to be removed.  I did the same thing.  You're not the only one.

  4. i don't think any type of paint or primer is going to stick to this type of caulk.  i wouldn't say you were an idiot; sometimes it just happens.  my caulk removing tools of choice are a small paint scraper with a new blade and a utility knife with a new blade.  i would score the center of the caulk with the knife and use the paint scraper to gently scrape it loose.  you might consider a 5N1 tool or a small putty knife as well.  i certainly wouldn't want you to damage the surround.  good luck!
