So I've practiced and practiced parallel parking for my provisional test today, but i failed anyway because I was too far from the curb.. and I couldnt remember how to get closer under the time limit. I was just wondering if anyone with experience parallel parking minivans (its the only car i can use for my provisional test) could give me some tips.. like specific "turn when this is lined up with that" details. thanks!

  1. I don't think there is a specific answer for that, but you should just practice it in different places with a buddy, and you'll be fine.

  2. The secret to parallel parking is the start...First, the parking space should be at least 1.5 times the length of your vehicle...Second, start your parking maneuver about 2 ft away from and even with the vehicle in front of the space you want to occupy...Make sure mirrors are adjusted good with right one pointed down just a little so you can see the ground.

Put it in reverse and activate right turn indicator...Give enough gas to move, then cover the brake.

As back of your vehicle starts to pass vehicle on R, turn wheel R and aim R/rear corner of your vehicle at point about 3-4 ft in front of vehicle behind you...Straighten the wheels...When front of your vehicle passes vehicle now in front of you, turn wheel L to straighten out...You should be within 18 inches of the curb.

I have a pickup truck and I used to drive a stretch limo and this is what works for me.

    All the best

  3. Pull up next to the car in front of your space.  Put your vehicle in reverse, then back in around the parked car at a fairly sharp angle toward the curb.  Your back tyres need to be nearly up to the curb when you start straightening out your wheel.  It will feel much too close if you're not used to it, but you only need two or three feet.  They won't get much closer to the curb as you straighten out the front.
