Question:

How can I participate in a paranormal investigation?

A group of us would like to participate in a real paranormal investigation, not a tour or anything staged. This would be something remniscent of Mtv's Fear. Does anyone know about anything in California? Specifically, Southern California if possible. Thanks.

  1. Talk to the managers and owners of supposedly haunted places. Also talk to the manager of the ghost tours they usually have access to buildings that no one else can get into.

Ask them if you can have a private tour in 1 building or location. They may allow this if you pay the tour fees.

Other then hooking up with a Paranormal group and tagging along which most won't like if it is a group as you state. The only other thing is to talk to a groundskeeper of a cemetery.

Get permission, and promise and do clean after yourselves.

You may even be able to make a deal where you can pick up and clean areas of the cemetery for them allowing you to do your investigations. (old cemeteries always need help)

  3. First, I'm curious what krennao  meant by, "unless you're credited...".

You can form your own group.  You can ask an already established group to take you along.  If it is a place they have already investigated a few times they may take you along.  If they are still actively investigating thought they probably won't.  We have kept the size of our team at a bare minimum just to keep unnecessary numbers of people away from investigations and cluttering up our data.  Tours of haunted places are probably your best bet.  Bring your cameras and recorders and take photos and record for EVP while on the tour.  You are VERY likely to find that investigations are anything but exciting 99% of the time.

  4. You can do this anywhere you want.  However, it will work best if it's dark out and the place you're seeking ghosts has a reputation for being haunted.  That way you'll be more open to suggestion and you'll be more likely to see what you perceive to be ghosts.

  5. USS hornet, Moss Beach distillery  , Merchant Marine Ship O'Brien.

Unless your credited you need permission for any investigation, other then that your going to have to get a pass on the ships and work that way.  Moss Beach is a restaurant you need owners permission, but its pretty much been verified that its haunted, but its a good place to go, its hot with activity. This is all in the Bay area.

Credited as in the owners of the property know why your there what your there for any your not going to be tresspassing or causing trouble. Its best to get permission if can, or alteast let them know why your there. Let them know your interested in what your doing, and not a bunch of people just wanting a scare.

  6. The link below (and the authors book) will help you locate both a group in your area (via the web page) and places reported to be haunted (many in the book).

Fear was either faked or they screened well for the most cowardly people they could find.

When you go on an actual investigation expect to stay at the location for hours (some groups rotate rooms and such) and have nothing unusual at all happen.

If you want to be scared try some Halloween style haunted house. If you just want a thrill paranormal investigation is not the way to go the vast majority of the time.

  7. Have you looked on meetup.com?  That would be a very good place to start.   Being that you're not experienced in investigation, you might could be able to meet people that are to kinda guide and teach you.
