Question:

How can I perform a proper swimming turn at the end of each length?

You know like the ones the pros do at the end of each length. They flip their bodies as though they were doing a somersault in the water. Im doing an indoor tri-athlon on friday and I really need to figure this out as it would shave a lot of time off what I'll be able to accomplish.

  1. Before you get to the end of the pool,tuck with your knees,make sure that your feet hit the wall,and push off.


  2. tuck, but use your hands to roll you forward.  As you are taking your last stroke, complete the stroke towards your waist with the hand closest to the wall, but turn the hand toward the wall about half way (when it meets the other hand coming forward--sort of like using a canoe paddle to turn the boat by pushing it into the current).  Flip your feet to the wall.  Push off on YOUR BACK, then quickly roll toward your belly--you can help this by taking your first stroke with the arm that is on the side of the body that is turned toward the bottom of the pool.

  3. When you're coming to the end of the length leave a strokes length between you and the wall. Roll forward, tucking your head into your chest (i would also suggest breathing out heavily while you're going round as it stops water going up your nose which will distract you from the rest of your swimming if it does) as you come out of the roll push off strongly from the wall with your feet. Don't come out of the water straight away, glide along in the water doing butterfly kicks until you come out on top of the water then go into your stroke. That will knock seconds off your timings.

TO LEARN A FLIP TURN, YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO A SOMERSAULT.  PRACTICE ONE AND STAND UP.  IF YOU CAN DO THAT, THEN MOVE TO STEP TWO.  IF YOU TURN TO THE SIDE, YOU NEED TO USE YOUR ARMS TO PROPEL YOU AND BALANCE YOU AS YOU FLIP.  (YOU SHOULD USE THEM ALWAYS)  NEXT, PERFORM ONE AT THE WALL BUT ONLY ROTATE 3/4 OF THE WAY AND PLANT YOUR FEET ON THE WALL.  MASTERING THIS, MOVE ON TO PRACTICING DROPPING UNDERWATER AND PUCHING OFF THE WALL STREAMLINED.  NEXT REPEAT BUT AFTER YOUR PUCH OFF AND ARE GLIDING, ROTATE TO TURN ON YOUR BELLY.  LASTLY, INCORPORATE THE ENTIRE TURN.  FLIP, PLANT THE FEET, PUSH OFF STREAMLINED AND ROTATE.  IMPORTANT NOTE....YOU NEED TO EXHALE OUT YOUR NOSE AS YOU FLIP OR YOU WILL GET WATER IN YOUR NOSE AND IT WILL HURT YOUR SINUSES.  GOOD LUCK!

  5. You do a sort of "forward roll" tucking your knees in when you're almost there, then (practice will tell you when), kick off the wall and half-twist your body to get back in the right position for swimming.

  6. When u are coming up to the edge, tuck your knees into your chest and roll forward. Kick hard off the wall when your foot meets it and you can start swimming back. Helps if you hold your breath the whole way thru. Hope I was a help

  7. Considering you havent tried this before and you are coming up to a triathlon I would suggest that you omit the flip/tumble turns. They can become very tiring over long distances as they shorten the amount of breath you can take as opposed to an open turn.

    Also if not executed well can considerably slow you down as you spend time getting back into the same lane!
