How can I persuade my parents to get a puppy/dog?

I am 13 (nearly 14) and I have wanted a puppy or a dog since I was 7. I live with my mum, dad and brother in a detatched house with a medium sized yard. My mum works from home so if we did get a dog it wouldn't be lonely. I am happy to walk him or her every day and I am so happy to groom him. I have asked my parents but they wont let me. They have both had dogs in the past so it's not like they don't like them.

Plz help me think of a way to make them chhange there minds. Thanks xx

  1. say you will walk it and care for it. haha say i'm lonely and have no friends! lol

  2. i would beg and give a puppy dog face lol

  3. I was in your place a few years ago(i'm sixteen now). I actually posted the same question, but the fact of the matter is, if they so no, then its a no.

Just ask them around christmas or your birthday every year. It might seem like its too long, but if you are truly responsible and want a dog, then you'll wait.

  4. You have to prove you're responsible enough to have a  dog.

You need to prove you'll feed and exercise him as well as groom him.

One thing you can do to prove you're responsible is to do volunteer work at a local rescue group.  You can provide a lot of help to the group. If you do this, you'll also learn a lot about dogs and their needs, and you might find just the right dog.  It's worked for other kids your age.  It's worth your while to try this.  -!-

  5. Start showing them that you are trying to be more responsible....like noticing that the trash needs to go out, keeping your room picked up, generally just helping out a little bit without being asked.

Give that a little time to be noticed, might be a few weeks, then ask them,

"what can I do to prove to you that I am ready to have a dog?"   Then they can't just say no, they have to consider how you've been helping out and at least have to explain why they don't want one.

As you say, they've had dogs before, so they like them. They also know from experience that it's a lot of work, more than just playing and taking a walk.  I think you're old enough, actually it's a great idea (I always had pets) so, you just need to sell them on it.  Good l**k---oops--LUCK!

  6. What you need to understand is there is more to owning a dog than just walking and spending time with it.  Vet care can be very expensive, and so are flea & heartworm prevention.  Dogs aren't cheap.  Besides the money issue, many childhood dogs end up the responsibility of the parents after the child leaves for school.  They might not want that, and you need to respect their decision about it.  Wait until you're out of college and in a stable situation.
