Question:

How can I play DVDs on my computer?

I've just bought a new computer and it does not seem to have any dvd software installed as when I put in the disk Windows Media Player comes up saying that it does not have "a compatible DVD decoder installed on the system" to be able to play a DVD movie. I checked the Windows site and they all seem to want money, are there not any free DVD software packs so I can watch all my old favourite movies such the Godfather and Scarface amongst others?

Thanks for your help.

  1. nope, you're gonna have to buy it seperate.

just stream movies online, as the only choice now

  2. download "k-lite codec pack" it's free and good .hope this helps

  3. Although there isn't a standalone DVD decoder that is free, there is a free solution. VLC is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

The VLC media player does not need a decoder to play DVDs, so its the best free solution for using a computer DVD player with no DVD decoder software.

You can download it here: -

  4. No, I'm afraid not. All computer programmes not already on your computer  when you buy it will have to be paid for. Its a sad fact of life, I know. My windows media player does play DVDs though...

  5. You said, you bought the new computer. Doesn't it come with PowerDVD software or for that sake any other DVD player software. If it has any such software then install it and you will be good to go.

If does not have any such thing, then install windows media player 11 from microsoft's site. It is free. On top of that install "Dscaler5" decoder. Search for "Dscaler5" decoder on Google and you will find it free. After this you will be able to play DVDs.

  6. http://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft...

    download and install

  7. Download WMP11 from Microsoft or use a 3rd party program like Media Player Classic or VLC.

  8. You're not going to have to buy anything, it isn't sad, and it's fine. All you need is the free K-Lite Codec Pack which comes with FFShow and the AC3 Filter for playing DVDs with Windows Media Player. http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.ht...

  9. Download something like Windows Media Player or Quicktime Player, once you have downloaded it, put your DVD in and a menu should come up saying what do you want to play your DVD.

Use this site to download Window Media player: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...

    Hope I helped!

  10. Check for updates or install VLC media player, its plays everything.

  11. if u go to the website i have given then u can find trial dvd software but other than that u have to by a dvd player (software) windows media player does have the decoder but as u know u have to buy it hope this helps in any way.

  12. I don't think so but if you mean what you said as in 'i bought it new' did you buy it with the operating system?

It might be worth checking if it was meant to come with stuff installed or not - the people you bought it off may of made an honest mistake - this happened to me once except it didn't have a bean in the way of software!

Hope it works out for you even if i'm wrong!
