How can I plumb in my washing Machine?

I have a washing machine in my kitchen. I want to move into another room downstairs with a downstairs toilet alread fitted in the room i want to put my washing machine.

The only water inlet pipe is the one for the toilet. Can i cut into the cold water pipe that connects to the toilet and run a pipe to my washing machine?

the washing machine only takes cold water. (it heats the water as necessary) Would it be safe and normal to do what i want to do? It would save me having to continue the original pipe from the kitchen through two walls into the room with downstairs toilet in.

I would also have a serparate cut off tap for the washing machine. Can anybody see any reason why i cannot do what i want to do?

thanks for reading!

  1. The simple answer to your question is you will have no problem doing what you want to do. It sounds as though you have all other issues covered, so go for it .

  2. you could do or use a tap and tee valve. Wheres the waste going in the toilet bowl..?

  3. where would the water outlet go?

cant see any reason why not but it would be better to run it from a nearest sink water pipe and connect the outpipe to the sinks overflow pipe

  4. You should be able to run a cold water outlet from any cold water line in your house.

But you still need a drain and that could be a bit tougher because the toilet drain shouldn't be tapped into unless you really know what you're doing and understand building codes.

  5. you have exactly the same issue i had . I have used the cold water feed to my toilet to supply the washing machine with its own valve  ( in case I need to replace it etc) and the outlet from the machine goes  to the sewer outlet outside the wall.

just make sure It is NOT a rainwater drain as this would be illegal!

  6. the water doesn't know where it is going before it gets to the toilet,  so you can let some of it go to the washing machine and it will never know,

seriously you will be OK, the toilet and the washing machines will just compete for the water if both being usedat the same time as they would if they were in different rooms. I  would put a shut off between the cold water and the washer, and connect to the washer before the toilet shutt off, so you can work on either fixture and use the other. I expect there already is a shut off for the toilet. Also use a reinforced hose to the washer so 10 years from now your washer doesn't flood your basement...

  7. their is absolutely no reason you cant do exactly as you have said just take from the feed to the toilet and you can put a tap on the machine side .
