Question:

How can I practice to do handstands?

This might seem a little random, but I want to be able to do a handstand whenever I want to. I'm 13 years, 5'11" tall, and weigh 135 lbs, although I'm not fat. I have good upper body strength (I can do about 40 push ups in one sitting). How can I practice? I've tried doing a handstand and then leaning against a wall to support me, but I don't know if this will help. Thanks!

  1. Yeah! Doing handstands against a wall is a very good thing to do. You just need to make sure you are keeping your ribs in, and pushing up, or "growing tall" as my coaches say, as much as you can. Also, put your hands as close to the wall as possible, without making yourself fall over. You can do this with your face to the wall, and with your back to the wall. But if you do your face to the wall, make sure you are not arching your back, this is not good form for a handstand.

Also, you can have people spot you. You can kick up to a handstand and have someone hold you there, in the right position, for 30-60 seconds.

  2. Having good upper body strength will help you alot. Do it up against the wall, or have someone hold your feet. Make sure you are really squeezing your leg muscles, this helps alot. And trying to walk on your hands will help you be able to hold your handstands longer. Also, another thing i will do is do a handstand up against the wall and do handstand push-ups. They will help your balance alot. Don't worry about doing alot at once, it all takes time!

  3. against a wall is great. thats exactly how i learned. i also had my sis help me by holding my feet balanced so i could do it on my own

  4. Yes, you can start out with the wall, either back-to or front-to it. To learn to get away from the wall don't put your hands all the way up to it, kick up, get your balance, then pull your feet away from the wall and hold the handstand. Remember to stay tight and not throw your head back to look at your hands, or you will get an arch that will ruin the handstand.

  5. If you have pretty low upperbody strength, a wall is good idea, but If u are pretty strong already a wall is terrible idea in my opinion. This is because it will slow the process in learning to hold a handstand  without wall assistance.I recommend u to walk with ur hands (handwalking ) since is much easier than holding a solid  handstand. Don't be afraid of falling!!! Every time u are about to fall forward, take steps forward with ur hands and u will not fall!!! Remember most of the balance is on the hands and wrists.Always keep ur legs together and toes pointed. It took me a least 2 weeks to learn  a solid handstand :)

    Good Luck my Friend ;)
