I am diabetic and I have the hardest time staying awake when I sit still too long. It henders my productivity and I can't stand it. Whether in class, studying, at work, or even enjoying a movie. I get 8 hrs of sleep, exercise moderately, and I eat well. How can I overcome this struggle?

  1. Do you have other problems?  Has the doctor checked you for kidney functions and/or anemia?

If your diabetes is under control, you should not feel tired.  You could have other problems like kidney disease or anemia, both of which are common in diabetics, and both of which will make you very tired.

Otherwise, what are your sugar readings? What was your latest A1C reading? IS your diabetes under good control, or are you spinning out of control?

Blood sugars should be between 90 and 110 as much as possible (5.0 - 6.0 mmol/l).

Your A1C reading should also be between 5 and 6.  Above 7 indicates that your diabetes is out of control.

  2. Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates.  Eat balanced meals at regular times with whole grains.

    Losing weight helps control diabetes.

  3. diabetes is an auto immune disease and when you are diabetic you are more likely to develop other issues with you endocrine system, not that this is the same as you but i started getting real tired a while back, but my sugars were always under control, it started to get worse and i started to develop other symptoms and was eventually diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, it can come on slowly and take a while to diagnose but my first symptom was being more tired than i should have been, so keep an eye on it

  4. Try drinking extra water. Thirst and dehydration can make you sleepy. Also, drink tea with cinnamon. You could be experiencing a spike in blood sugar. Cinnamon will hep to control that.

  5. Methamphetamines

  6. A diabetic with good control of their disease should not feel tired or drowsy like that. I could understand being bored and having that feeling, even with good control. But if it is not boredom, there has to be another problem. Check your blood sugars and make sure they are not on the low side.  This can cause a lot of drowsiness.  You should have you doctor do some tests on you, you could be low in iron, or it could be from many different things

Blood sugar levels should be between 110 and 180.  Lower readings can cause you to feel tired.  An A1C of 5 is too low. This is a level a NON diabetic would have. A1C levels should never be below 6 for a diabetic.
