How can I prevent from getting rats in my house?

i dont have them, but how can i prevent? what causes them to come? im paranoid.

go to a place that sells trapping supplies and get some fox urine lure. Go around the outside house and dip a q tip into it and leave it by the foundation.  The smell of it will keep rats,mice,and squirrels away because fox is there natural enemy's.  Gander mnt.,Dickes or some sporting good store carry this

keep your house clean. keep your trash away from where they could get it. make sure there aren't any holes in your house.

use mouse traps and poison just in case
