The first leaf is huge and standing strait up. I think the wind made the top foldover backwards which tore the leaf. What can I do to prevent future tears in this plant?

  1. Well, if you think the wind is doing it, plant a little wind break. Ilex crenata (Japanes sky pencil holly) might be nice -- only 12 inches wide as a young plant and can be sheared to any height. Place a couple of these around.
