I have two syrian hamsters, separately caged, but next to each other. I think one of them has wet tail.

I have moved the uninfected hamster's cage into another room and thoroughly cleaned it out. and replaced all food and water.

Is there anything else I should do to procect my other little guy??

  1. You can buy DryTail and put 5 drops in each water bottle. In 3-4 days it should be cleared it; and prevent the healthy one from getting sick.

  2. Wet tail in hamster is also called as proliferative ileitis and regional enteritis. This is a highly contagious disease, and most common in recently weaned hamsters.

Actually you did a wonderful thing - separated the infected one. It is also a good idea to wash your hands thoroughly after handling a hamster suffering from Wet Tail, to avoid passing the infection back to the hamster worsening its condition and certainly before handling other hamsters.

Remove droppings from the cage at intervals and disinfect the cage with a disinfectant designed for small animal cages when cleaning the cage.

Susceptibility to Wet Tail is also associated with hereditary. Hence it is advised not to breed these hamsters.

  3. Like the first poster said. Get dry tail. (you should be able to get it from petsmart or any pet store) and give him the amount he needs accordin to the back. if he doesnt get better in 5 days then I cant much help you. Aswell I would advice you to keep him in the seprate room untill he is cured.

IF he dies.(Hope you can save him) Clean his cage with Hot bleached water and let the cage drip dry as this will kill all the germs.
