Both of my parents and I were born in England. When I was two years old, my mother met and married a man in the United States Military. When I was 11 years old and living in New Jersey my birth dad gave up all rights to me and my step father adopted me. Now the question, seeing as he adopted me I was told that I was automatically dual citizenship since he was in the Military and my mother still has not obtained her citizenship. We have lost my adoption papers and birth certificate how can I go and prove that I am an American citizen?

  1. Contact the court that granted the adoption.

  2. You can request a U.S. birth certificate on line. I believe it is an approx. $10 fee. Money well spent. Good luck to you.

  3. Are you sure that you became a citizen just by being adopted? I was under the impression that first your adoptive father would have to get a green card for you and following that you can apply for citizenship. I would talk to your parents to find out exactly what was filed on your behalf with immigration - did they use an immigration lawyer with experience in adoption based immigration? Don't assume that everything was taken care of just because they are adults and you were a minor. There are many cases where the correct paperwork is not filed on behalf of the child and they grow up thinking thet are legal etc and it turns out they aren't... do you have an American passport? A social security number? Did they keep any of the paperwork filed with immigration?  I would contact the county records office for where the adoption occurred and start there.  Good Luck!

  4. well you most likely will have to have your adoption  papers and birth certificate to prove citizenship. You won't be able to get a drivers  license or social security card  with out it. You will have to contact the courts where you were adopted & find out where to get  a replacement set as for your birth certificate call the municipal office where you were born to get a copy. I was wondering how did you enroll in school with out a birth certificate? Good Luck..

  5. you can get copies of your birth certificate and adoption papers from the proper authorities.

I dont know who to contact in england, but I am sure all you need to do is look on the NJ state website for information about adoption records.

  6. You need to get copies of your adoption papers and birth certificate.
