Question:

How can I prove to my parents that I am mature?

I am 17 and have an excellent academic record. I want to go to drama school to study stage management and technical theatre - my parents insist I go to university and get a "proper" degree first. I want to try and persuade them that this is something I have thought about long and hard and I'm sure it's exactly what I want to do.

Do you have any ideas of things I can do to persuade them that I am perfectly mature enough to make this kind of decision and know what I want to do?

(NB: I do not want to go to university, even to study drama, so please don't suggest that as a softening option. Thanks.)

  1. You have to be able to get a job, and the more well rounded you are, the more opportunities there will be for you. What you need is a communications degree with an emphasis in stage management. My daughter went to University of Missouri at Kansas City which has one the finest programs in the country. Check it out.

You can prove to your parents that you are mature enough when you learn to look at the bigger picture and learn to compromise.

  2. You need to sit down with your parents and explain to them exactly how you feel in a calm and sensible way.  Don't shout and scream and get upset, that would only make you look childish.  Remember they only want the best for you, and probably think getting a university degree is the best course.

    Good luck & best wishes.

  3. I suggest you study drama at a university. You don't wanna put all your eggs in one basket. Also, I think many drama fans are highly educated and you don't want to sound like an idiot when you talk to fans after the production.
