Question:

How can I pull up carpet only up to the threshold of the next room?

I have carpet in the foyer of my condo, and it runs into the hallway, bedrooms, and living room/dining room. (It's all the same carpet.) Out of these areas, the only place where I'm allowed to have hard flooring is the foyer.

What is the best way to remove the carpet only up to the threshold? Should it be cut with a little room to spare, and then pared down from there? I have no experience working with carpet, but I want to do this myself. Any advice is much appreciated.

  1. Yes, I would cut it beyond where you want it to stop, pull off the foyer area, trim back as desired and finish with a metal strip that will cover the raw edge.

Along the walls in the foyer therewill be strips of wood that the carpet is fastened to- unless it is glued and that is another problem.

  2. Carpet is usually seamed at the door threshold! Pick it loose from the tackboard at that juncture and then go for the rest.

  3. Give yourself extra room on the carpet so that it can be rolled under to look like a clean finish.

  4. most of the time it's going to be joined at each doorway....stop short of the doorway and then look for the taped joint

  5. first you cut the carpet, leave it extra on the transistion side, so you will have enough to recut it too fit to the wood after it is in place. then you go around the walls pulling the carpet away from the tact strip.after it is all seperated from the tact strip you the cut it down to sizes you can handle. you roll it up and the trash it. after all the carpet is out you then deal with the padding in the same manner, after you use a pry bar and hammer to pull all the tact strip out. after you will either have staples  or glue to deal with that was used for holding the pad down.after which you make sure you read the direction on putting your new flooring in what ever it is good luck... if you live in fresno ca. never mind good luck

  6. Cut it along the doorjam with a utility knife. If you have an electric staple gun you can cut the pad back 1" & fold & staple the carpet. If not you can get a peice of flat gold or silver from home depot for your transition peice.

Then you have to use a screwdriver & hammer to pop up all the tack strip & pull all the staples the pad is put down with.
