Question:

How can I put my monthly Soc Sec Dis. check into an IRA - any tricks or advice ?

I am disabled, and I live with my family and have minimal expenses.

I would love to save for my future with an IRA (pref. Roth).

However, I understand I cannot since it is not 'earned income'.

There must be a way around this. Can I pay my family 'rent' (my SSD check amount) and then have them 'pay' me for helping with housework, etc.?

If documented properly, would this be a legal/valid approach that would enable me to put cash into a Roth IRA?

Any tips or suggestions? I know very little about taxes or accounting, so please keep it simple languagle. Thanks!

  1. I understand you situation because I am in the same boat.  However we are barred from contributing to an IRA because we have no earned income.  As to your "work" idea, remember that if you work, at any job, and make over a certain amount of money per month, you lose your SSDI.
