Question:

How can I quiet a noisy belt on my Honda Civic?

The belt is making a squealing noise on my '98 Civic. It's always there, from the time I start the car until the time I shut it off. I think it's worse when it's humid outside, but I'm not absolutely sure.

Anyway, is there anything besides belt/pulley replacement that can quiet this down? It's quite annoying.

I'm hesitant to try belt dressing, because I used it on a different car years ago and it actually made it worse... maybe I used too much or something.

Thanks!

  1. sounds like you need a new belt.

have your belts replaced and tighten.

  2. Buy a Honda Civic Service manual (official Honda) and observe all the specific areas around the pulleys that require a touch of lubrication/grease.  This will keep you from having to replace anything; just regular maintenance by clearing any buildup of rust or corrosion within the center of the pulleys.

Make sure you lubricate at the specific areas.  Grease on the belt can wear out the life much faster.  Also, you'll need a 50mm crankshaft holder/adjust tool (may require long breaker bar) to adjust the tool or remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.

    Good luck!

  3. sounds like you need a new belt but for now you can put a little dawn dish liquid on it that will quiet it down untill you get it replaced

  4. sounds like the belt is lose.  the hondas you really have to get them tight for the squeal to leave. never use dressing its c**p.

  5. Have it checked as if warn it will break> since it been slipping it need to be replaced> Have the pulleys checked>
