Question:

How can I re-attach cabinet door when s***w pulled out?

Some kids pulled my cabinet door off, and now the s***w got pulled right out of the wood. The hinge is in a specially made portion of the door, so you can't move the hinge to a different part of the door. Also, if you move up or down for a new s***w hole in the wood, the door will not be in quite the right spot. Can the old s***w hole be filled up and will it take a new s***w if you put glue or something in it? Has anybody out there had this same problem? Thanks, all who answer.

  1. Wood glue and toothpicks or wooden matches stuffed in the old hole, let it set up a little, then put the door back up.  I have been known to go ahead and put the cabinet door back up right away.  It is easier to get the s***w in when the glue is wet and it compacts the match sticks or tooth picks.  Just don't let anyone play with it till it gets dry.

I was a single mom with 3 kids, renting, for years.  I fixed many cabinet doors just like this.

  2. we used to fill the hole wiith match sticks.   jam them in there till no more will fit, cut them flush with the cabnet then try to rescrew the s***w into the same old spot.   you just need to refill that hole with some kind of wood if possable.

    good luck to ya.

  3. Go to Home Depot or Lowes.  They can help you.  You might have to put a small piece of wood and some glue in the hole.  Make sure the distructive friends aren't invited to any more parties.

  4. Depends on the type of wood.

Is it real solid wood or chipwood kitchen cabinets?

If its real wood then the best option is to pack it.

i.e. push a wooden plug into it tightly, sand it flat, then reinsert the s***w.

If this isnt a good enough repair, then you can drill a hole into it the same size as a wooden dowel(dowel is a rod of wood),woodglue the dowel then squeeze it in,let it dry, sand flat, reinsert s***w.You can make your own dowels with a dowel cutter,by a length of dowel from the hardware store or buy a pack of short dowels.

If you are not sure, ask in the hardware shop the size of drillbit compatible with the dowel.

  5. Here's an old secret that has worked for me for years. Get a bottle of wood glue, such as Elmers, or Carpenters Wood Glue, wet down some tooth picks (wood) with the glue, insert into the hole till you can't get any more in there. Break them off as you go. After they set overnight, use a razor blade to cut them off even with the surface, and reinstall the hinge. Good as new.
