Less than a week ago, a close family friend passed away from cancer. She has three daughters, all still in school. I myself am only a junior in high school, but want to find a way to reach out to family's who are affected by family members with health issues without invading the privacy of these families. Any ideas how I can make a difference?

  1. Contact the local Hospice in your area and let them know you wish to volunteer

  2. I think it's wonderful that you are taking the initiative to make a difference in the lives of people that you don't even know.  And there are many ways that you can help them.  You can start different programs in your community, like organizing a charity bake sale, where all the proceeds will go to a particular family.  You could do the same with a car wash or a kiddie carnival.  One thing that particularly calls to me is when kids have cancer.  Often times, the family spends so much money on all the treatment that they don't have a normal Christmas.  You could get a shoe-box and stuff it full of fun toys and deliver them to children's cancer hospitals in your area.  Also, if a parent dies and leaves young children behind, after a couple weeks or months (depending on the specific situation), you could take them all out for a fun day.  You could go shopping or to an amusement park or on a picnic.  And kudos once again for being an amazing person!  Hope this helps, and good luck!

  3. I'm sure you can find numerous opportunities by searching national databases. They may need people to fundraise, do administrative tasks, donate hair, sit with hospice patients, etc.You can also participate in charity walks. The first link gives information on different volunteer databases. The second is a site called Locks of Love. The third will have links to charity walk/runs.
