How can I read old headstones from pictures?

I have a picture of a headstone from 1800s. I would like to try to bring the etched words up to be readable. I have Picaso2 and Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8. Several people have suggested reversing the picture but I cannot seem to find where to do that in either program. Thank you.
