  1. Buy an SDS I or SDS II. It plugs into a laptop and gives real-time ATC on your computer. It relys on picking up transmissions from aircraft transponders in Mode-C. Find the adverts in any good aircraft enthusiast magazine. Costs about £400.

  2. FlightAware provides near real-time information on flights in the air, delayed by only a few minutes.

I've seen sites that provide radar screen simulations based on real-time data (not sure if any delay is included), but they are usually only for a few isolated locations, not just any arbitrary airspace.

There aren't really any security issues here, despite the widespread and intense paranoia, which is mostly media-generated.  Bad guys can spot airplanes just by looking up, if that's what they want to do. It's just difficult and impractical to provide absolutely up-to-date radar information for free on a public site, and the demand is extremely low compared to the complexity of implementation, and the cost is quite high.

Live radar for aviation is hard to find for much the same reasons that one cannot easily find live automobile traffic information or live railroad traffic information.

  3. take a look at AirNav Systems

  4. Become an air traffic controller.

  5. do you think you would be allowed this info after all the terrorist activity?? dream on

  6. I am making a couple of assumptions when answering your question. First that you are interested in tracking flights from home and second that you want to do it at the lowest cost possible.  If these assumptions are correct than you should visit http://flightaware.com/  There are similar tools out there, but essentially it uses a filed flight plan along with radar information to display flight progress.  It does not display flights that do not have filed flight plans
