Question:

How can I receive stronger signals on my scanner?

I have a Pro-96 from Radio Shack with a 800MHz antenna, also from radio shack. Over the passed couple months my scanner has not been getting as good reception as it did before. Is there any way I can boost up the reception on it?

  1. MEE TOOH!  :O  I have been having the same problem.  I think it is the antenna, myself.  I am gonna look for a good antenna when I get the time.  I am using a long wire attached to the antenna that comes out of the scanner right now.  It improves it ALOT, but not enuff!  :)

Ya just take a long piece of wire, and string it around the house.  20 feet or more.  One end goes to nothin, the other end goes to an alligator clip, which is clipped on to your antenna.  If you don't have an alligator clip,  just strip some of the wire off on the end, and wrap it around the antenna.  Tape it in place.

Of course, an outdoor antenna is much better, but alot more work.

  2. The best way to improve the reception of your scanner is to use a better antenna.  One mounted on your roof or other high point would be best.  Basically as high as possible.  Use the right cable and make sure the connectors are installed right.  You might also look into an all band antenna rather than an 800 MHz antenna to improve reception of other frequencies.  And check the squelch k**b on the scanner it it has one.  If it's set wrong it could prevent the reception of weaker signals.  Turn it all the way counter-clock wise.  You should hear a static noise.  Then turn it clockwise until the noise just stops.  If you hear bursts of static, then turn the k**b just a little more clockwise to stop that.
