  1. All you really need for the simplest hookup is coaxial cable.  The cable goes from your antenna/satellite/cable outlet to the ANT IN connector on the back of the VCR.  Another coax cable goes from the ANT OUT (or TV OUT) connector on the VCR to the ANT IN connector on the TV.  When the TV is turned on, you will need to tune it to channel 3 or 4 - the VCR has a switch or a menu setting that lets you choose which channel to use.

Change channels on the VCR.  If the TV display changes you are OK.  If it diesnt, look for a TV/Video button on the VCR or the remote.  Press that, and now the TV display should change when you change channels on the VCR.

Using the VCR tuner, go to the channel you want to record.  Put a blank tape in the VCR, and press RECORD.  If that doesn't work, some machines require you to hold down the RECORD button while you press the PLAY button.

The owner's manual for the VCR will tell you all this and more, including how to program the VCR to start automatically.  If you don't have a manual, you might be able to find one by searching the manufacturer's web site, under "service".
