Question:

How can I redo the floor tiles in the bathroom? We're in an old apartment- the floors are gross!?

They're permanently discolored and nothing I've done has gotten them to look clean- they always look dirty no matter how much we scrub. (I've actually taken a toothbrush and toothpicks trying to scrape at the grout and it's just impossible). So is it possible to paint over the tiles (i think they're ceramic)? Is there any other way to cover the floor effectively? We aren't planning on staying here forever so it doesn't need to be perfect, just a temporary fix for us so it's not disgusting!

  1. There are 12X12 peel and stick tiles that are both affordable and attractive and it comes with easy to follow instructions for installation. It really is easy.

    Good Luck

  2. If you are renting then the only remedy is a large carpet. Landlord will make you pay for a new floor if you paint or cover the tile with anything.  If you own the apt. then do it right and replace the floor with new tiles.  You will make your money back on resale.

  3. Is it the grout that's discolored, or has the glaze worn off the tile?

If it's just the grout, the tool you want is called a "grout saw", and there are both manual and electric versions.  You'll chisel out all the old grout with the grout saw, vacuum well, and apply fresh grout and sealer.  Tedious but not difficult.

  4. You can go to the local Tile Distributor and get some muriatic acid to clean the floor, or you can check with them about having an installer come and tile over the existing tiles.  You can tile over tile in some cases.  Look in the yellow pages and call a Tile Distributor in your area and ask them what to do they can help you.  If you use the peel and stick tiles as suggested you have to remove the existing tile and that can be a job.

  5. The lowest price and easy way is to cover with a carpet piece, depending on the size about $15 to $25.  From any carpet store.  Or for a little more a large washable bath mat cut to fit the room.  You can also put a laminate floor over the tile floor.  Try to find a few boxes left over at a flooring store.  Ask about water resistance, some are better than others.  Will last for a few years.
