Question:

How can I reduce the BOD and oil and grease in my waste stream?

We have a relatively small batch waste treatment system. We have two 10K gallon tanks. They have activated sludge from the municipal waste treatment facility. Our water is fairly clear, the TSS is about 200 mg/l. We think our problem is soluble BOD contributing to oil and grease. Our limit for O/G is 100 mg/l and we've been around 124 and 150 on a couple of occasions. Would it help to seed with industrial bacteria specifically tailored to our needs? Where are some sources for such products?

  1. The installation of an oil/water separator would reduce your O&G.  If you inject a bacteria, you will need to include it on your permit, or revise your permit as it would be considered a treatment process.

You could probably add a filtration system (like a bag filter) to reduce your BOD and O&G.
