Question:

How can I register a car that is not in my name?

I currently live in CT. I am moving to FL in 2-3 weeks. My CT registration is up June 18. So, it would make no sense for me to register my car in CT if I will be gone before the registration is up.

However, the car is in my fathers name. I am not on the car loan at all. My father lives in MA.

How can I get my car registered in FL without him there?

Any suggestions would be so helpful. Thank you very much!

  1. call the fl dmv they could tell you maybe you can look online anyway there is paper work for that

  2. You can't register a vehicle unless the title is in your name.  Hands down.  No exceptions.   The only way would be for your dad to sign the title over to you, and he can't if there is a lien on the vehicle.  FL won't even title the car for you if there's a lien that hasn't been released.  Just have your dad renew the registration again in CT for you.  There's no problem in driving a car in Fl that is registered in CT.

  3. If the car is in your fathers name, and there is a loan against it, the loan company may not allow you to take the car out of state, check with them first.  Also it's doubtful you can go to another state and register a car that isn't yours.

In fact, per http://www.flhsmv.gov/dhsmv/newflres.htm... it appears you can not do that.

"Take your proof of Florida insurance; your original out of state title and verification of the motor vehicle's *vehicle identification number (VIN), completed on form HSMV 82040 or HSMV 82042 (available on our website), to your local Florida county tax collector's office."

  4. unfortunately, if the vehicle has a lien against it,  it must remain registered in the name of the person that is on the loan.  if the loan were to be paid in full, then your father could do an act of donation to you and the title could then be transferred to you
