Basically I have a HP computer and was wondering if I were to reformat my computer, or wipe it. How would I go about re-installing xp since it came pre-installed, if this is possible?

  1. put in the recovery disc and restart your computer and it will boot up the cd and just follow the instructions given

  2. Your computer should have come with an operating system disk. You need to boot off it. You will have the options to partition, format, and install the operating system. Installing the operating system will also format the hard drive first.

To boot off the disk, usually you need to have the disc in the drive, and as the screen with the logo comes up, there should be a note telling you which button to press to go to startup options. Press it (you don't have much time to press it, so if you miss, you can restart), and choose to boot from the CD drive.

  3. Most of the newer HP's have a restore partition that can be accessed using (f10) during boot up. This boots up to the restore partitions and gives you the available restore options.

  4. It should have came with reinstallation discs.  If not, you should be able to reorder them from HP

  5. they usually give you a cd with programs that were already pre-installed check the cd that came with your computer and try to re-install them or you can always go back to your reset point

  6. Your best bet is to pull the hard drive and hook it up to another pc via usb, wipe the drive completely, reinstall and format and instal the new os. If you try just formatting with the drive in the original pc it will complicate things with the hp backup partition. Im sure there may be an easier way, but this way is most effective IMO.

I recomend this way if upgrading the os only, not if your trying the disc it came with! (not the full version, c**p)
