How can I relate Baseball to Mathematics?

Needs to find out as many ways as I can that mathematics is related to Baseball and write an essay, in fewer than 500 words.

I need to:

- Explain in my own words how mathematics is used in this sport and identify the type of mathematics involved (statistics, geometry, probability etc)

-Show examples of how to apply the theorem / equation / formula to mathematical calculations involved in the sport.

Thank You!

  1. Well baseball is probably one of the most mathematically complex sports there is in america!

First off, think about pitching/hitting averages. They are based off of ratios, how many times a person hit the ball/how many times a person was up to bat.

Or what about the curve of the ball as it arcs over the infield past the outfielders and smashes into the Big Green? There is a parabola for ya.

Take the measurements in baseball as well. The pitchers mound to home plate, is it measured in meters or in feet? Its measured in feet. There are some numbers for you.

Can you divide the baseball diamond into triangles? If you can, what kind of triangles are there? How do they know where to put second base or third base? They use angles. What are the angles they use?

I hope this helps a bit. I am in college right now with the hopes of becoming a high school math teacher. Numbers are all around, just keep your eyes open.

  2. there's a lot of math involved in baseball if you really think about it. each hit/miss/error that a player makes becomes a stat. these stats can be used along with probabilities to see which team or player will fare well in the next season. and so on...
