  2. A rank is a row of squares on the board. A file is a column of spaces.

If you looked at a list of names in order of importance or fame on a piece of paper, the names would be in a rank from greatest to least. The highest rank would be the name farthest away from you, while the lowest would be closest to you. The names in a rank go across the page. That is how I remember what a rank is.

When people line up in a queue, they are usually lined up "single file." Imagine eight lines of people in a single file line waiting to buy tickets or refreshments. The concessionaire is along the back wall, and the eight lines are coming out toward you, single file. This is how I remember what a file is.

In castling notation, the number of circles correspond to the number of squares the rook, or castle, moves. The king always moves two squares, and the rook moves one square past the king. When you castle king's side, the rook moves two squares, hence the notation O-O. When you castle queen's side, the rook moves three squares, hence the notation O-O-O. - LJS

  3. When the King inspects the RANKS he walks sideways.  When she goes up the Queen FILES her nails.

Kingside the king is two squares from the side.  (0-0 is two "0"s)  Queenside is three squares. (0-0-0 is three "0"s)

  4. When you castle, doesn't matter what side, the king always moves two spaces.

    Regarding your other question, I'm baffled. What's a rank/file?

Are you refering to bishops and rooks?
