How can I remove a negative mark from credit if I can not find the collection agency to make payment to.?

I am buying a house and need to clear one final negative mark from my credit due to a hospital bill from 5 years ago. I've been contacting the collection agencies that it was sold to for the last three months now and nothing. This is the only thing that is keeping me from securing a mortgage loan.

To add to these answers.....

When you contact the credit bureau to dispute this, request that they supply you with the name, address and phone number of the person furnishing the credit information.  This is required under the FCRA, it will give you a clear direction on who to contact.

If they don't supply this info, how did they investigate your dispute in the first place?

You should send a letter to the credit bureaus disputing the debt and maybe you will get lucky.  If the collector does not respond to the credit bureau's request for verification of the debt within 30-45 days of their request, the negative remark may be removed from your report in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

If the debt shows as verified, the credit bureau typically supplies the address of the creditor so you can follow-up.  Use the address supplied in their response letter.
