Question:

How can I remove difficult weeds organically?

I have weeds growing with strong roots (grassy weeds) in a garden bed and on the driveway. I don't want to spray them with chemicals. I have tried spraying with vinegar and water, but it doesn't work. They are too deep rooted to pull up. Any suggestions?

  1. Pulling is really the only way to keep them out of the driveway without using chemicals, vinegar never works.

as for the bed you can pull them and lay down 4 or 5 layers of newspaper  where you are having the problems then mulch over the paper, it's organic, the paper will decomp and feed the plants you want and it's better than putting down a weedblock fabric because this way when weeds do grow up through it's easy to pull the weeds out of the paper.   the paper would need replaceing every year i do it in the spring when i mulch and i almost never weed (i'm only now seeing small weeds this year.

  2. You have to go chemical. You can't dig them up because you won't get all the root and they will just come on back.  If they are in gardens or around trees you can spray round up but if they are in the lawn spray Ortho Weed B Gone Max because round up will kill everything including the grass.

  3. USE A SHOVEL,OR HIRE A GARDNER

  4. There is no way to remove difficult weeds organically... other than handpulling.  This requires labor.

I would suggest Round up... tho it is a chemical it is safe as long as you don't spray into a pond.

  5. Digging them up would be safe...wait until after a good rain shower when the soil will let go of the root easily...I have also heard that sprinkling salt on some weeds will kill them, such as the weeds that grow between the cracks of a brick sidewalk...it's nice to hear you don't want to use Ortho or other chem :-).....peace!
