How can I remove parts of the Shell without breaking it?

I'm going to be Ariel for Halloween this year, and I bought Two Shells to be the bra. But since they are real sea shells, they have the extra bits that were used when the shells were alive in the ocean...I'm not sure what they're called, but they're like this one:

Any ideas of how to get rid of the "Flap"s at the ends of the shells without breaking the shell?

Or, just use sandpaper or a brush (ex. toothbrush or cleaning brush) to scrape it off.
