How can I remove the codec from an avi file?

I've just figured out that my dvd player will only play avi files which aren't encoded with any codec. How can I remove the codecs from the rest of my avi files, so I can watch them on my dvd player? I don't want to have to convert my avi files to dvd files.

  1. Codecs are in your computer, they're like a device driver.  You can remove them, but it only hurts your computer's performance.

.avi may or may not be encoded and need a special codec - usually divx gives people trouble.  You need to convert your .avi's to a format your DVD player already has a codec for, because, unlike the computer, the DVD player can't go out on the internet and find/download a codec if it is missing.

  2. Codec is short for compressor/decompressor.  A codec is a device that converts analog video and audio signals into a digital format for transmission. It also converts received digital signals back into an analog format.

So, even though you do not want to do any work to achieve your goal, that is exactly what you will have to do.  Convert the files.
