How can I remove the sprocket on a Sturmey-Archer hub?

I'd be removing the sprocket from an old AG hub and putting it onto an FG one. They were both made in 1959.

  1. Usually you have to use a peg spanner/wrench,but you can use a very soft nose drift in the recess to unscrew the sprocket,it is generally a left hand thread.

    By the way... if you downloaded the Sturmey Archer info I supplied in a previous answer, you should be able to look at the picture and see how it's done.

    EDIT: OK. There should be a split ring, round in cross section that needs to be removed.  Using an external split ring tool, spread the ring until it pops off... be careful as it will have some power behind it if it springs away! The cog should slide off easily.

    If you don't have a split ring tool (you really should have one) you may be able to coax a small screwdriver under the ring at the split which you could then lift up and over the shoulder... but be careful... I suggest wearing safety glasses.
